Black Lives Matter is a movement, not a moment. So even when things die down, we must continue pressing forward.

We at @blackcreatehers are sharing some ways to stay involved and continue moving the needle in the back community. We have to lead by example and be the change we want to see, so weโ€™ve compiled a list of resources that have helped us during this time of social unrest. Please be kind enough to share this with a friend.

Support Black Owned Businesses

Here is a List of Black Owned Businesses– According to a TEDx Talk by Maggie Anderson, she explains โ€œa dollar circulates in Asian communities for up to 28 days, in Jewish communities for nearly 20 days, in white communities for 17 days and in Hispanic communities for 7 days. Yet in the Black community, a dollar circulates for only 6 hoursโ€. How is that possible? We have to do our parts to circulate the black dollar in our community.

We've read this book many times before, but yesterday when we read it, we read it with passion ๐ŸคŽ.โฃ โฃ As you know I always talk to A about what's going on especially when it directly relates to him/us. We talked about the protests & why it was important. Then we made our posters & off we went to march.โฃ โฃ Some of his questions/concerns after we read the book yesterday:โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ – Mom, will they put me in jail for protesting like the kids in the book?โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ – How long did the kids march for?โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ – Will they spray water hoses at us and let the dogs bite us?โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ – Mom, I don't want to be shooted by the police. I don't want to be dead.โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ – I wish everyone would be nice to everyone so we don't even have to march.โฃ โฃ My poor mama heart ๐Ÿ˜ข. Even just typing this out is bringing me to tears.โฃ โฃ PS: I did not tell Aiden what to write on his poster. I asked him how he was feeling, and what message he wanted to send across. He did that all by himself!! But y'all, why should my SEVEN YEAR OLD even have to do this?? Ugh๐Ÿ˜ข!โฃ โฃ I shared this book & many other's over a year ago on my feed & encouraged you all to find a copy & read it to your children. Some of you probably thought to yourself, "What's the point, there's no racism, she's tripping." I hope that now your blinders are off & you see why I shared those books in the first place.โฃ โฃ If you've been following me for a while then you already know how I passionate I am about Diversity & teaching my Black son about Black history. You also know that I encourage others to diversify too.โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ โฃ This whole "Black Lives Matter" isn't a 1 day, 1 week or 1 month thing for me. THIS IS MY EVERYDAY LIFE!!โฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃโฃ โฃ So, I hope you'll do more than just read to your children! I hope you'll do your part in raising global diverse children who understand that no one should be judged by the color of their skin.โฃโฃ โฃ Please don't solely rely on me or anyone else to teach/tell you what to do ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ. DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Anti-Racist Books for Kids– Someone once said to me, โ€œI had a black friend in college, I promise Iโ€™m not racist.โ€ Another said โ€œI have a black child, how can I be racist?โ€ The โ€œI have a black friend / I have a black spouse / I have a black child / I have a black dog (etc) so Iโ€™m not racistโ€ narrative is so untrue. โ€˜In a racist society, itโ€™s not enough to be non-racistโ€”we must be ANTI-RACIST.โ€™

โ€”Angela Davis

Dear White Moms: An Open Letter about Children & Racism– The truth of the matter is that racism is learned behavior. Have you ever seen how a group of children just play and love on one another? Thatโ€™s because all they know is love; racist individuals are children who became tainted along the way.

Talking to Children About Social Injustice issues– As I am sure you know children often surprise us, at least mine do, with their level of knowledge on a particular subject and I can guarantee you this conversation will be no different. Studies have shown that children in preschool are keenly aware of racial injustices. What this means for us as parents is having a stopping point for these types of conversations will be needed. Having an idea of how much information you are comfortable sharing with your children will help you better navigate the discussion.

Find Your Role in Social Change

Find Your Role in Social Change– The โ€œtrendโ€ of supporting black will die down and adjusting to the algorithm will be a new challenge to beat. I encourage you to BE PART OF THE CHANGE, NOT PART OF THE TREND. Donโ€™t stop your support. Donโ€™t stop learning and teaching your children to be anti-racist in an environment where racism comes all too easy.

Pulse Detected-Away with Knees on our Neck– A gut wrenching poem about the African American experience, along with a list of resources to continue to support #BLM

I have been #RunningWithMaud for the past two months and have started a run club of black runners that continue to run for the cause. If you’d like to join the run challenge, please reach out to me on Instagram and I’ll get you added.

There are a million different areas I could have chosen to live in Atlanta. I live on the south side.โฃโฃ โฃโฃ Much like the stereotype, โ€œ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฉโ€ typically has a negative connotation. Most people think the south side of Atlanta is only filled with poor black people in low income housing. They think itโ€™s poverty stricken and crime ridden. They think thereโ€™s no value in buying on this side of town. ๐“๐ก๐ž๐ฒโ€™๐ซ๐ž ๐ฐ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ . Maybe 10 years ago, that used to be the case. But now? Nah. The city of South Fulton is one of the most affluent black neighborhoods in the southeast region of the U.S. The property value has tripled in the last 5 years and has become one of the most desirable areas in Atlanta for real estate investing. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ This is me running through my ๐›๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ค neighborhood. Every single day, I get to run for miles and see people that look like me. Black fathers playing basketball with their sons. Black mothers gardening with their daughters. Black home ownership. Black enterprise. Black business. Black support. Black leadership. Black excellence. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ Everyday I run through my neighborhood, I think about Ahmaud Arbery. I think about how he was gunned down and murdered in cold blood for doing the very thing I get to do everyday. Because of Ahmaud, Iโ€™m even more proud of my community. Iโ€™m even more inclined to help find resources for better opportunities for my daughter on the south side, rather than running to the north for the promise of a โ€œ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณโ€ education. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ Iโ€™m at almost 20 miles in one week and it feels damn good. Why? Because every time I run, I #runwithmaud. Itโ€™s not too late to join the June run challenge. If youโ€™re interested, just let me know! #blackandproud
