Holy Grail Foundations

Okay, lets be honest here. 80% of the time I leave the house, I have on some type of makeup. Most times, its not much- just foundation, mascara, and a good lippie. All of these things are essential, especially a good lippie! But lately, I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on my makeup (pats self on back lol). So let’s talk foundation! Choosing the right foundation for your skin is so important for your overall makeup look. You can have the best mascara, liner, concealer, blush, and highlight; but a crappy foundation is a recipe for disaster. My best advice for choosing the right foundation is finding your right shade. It breaks my heart when I see women with foundation that is two shades lighter (or darker) than their skin tone. FIND YOUR SHADE…and stick with it… until the season changes alters your skin, then you may need a new foundation. The next most important thing is identifying your skin type. The main skin types are:

  • oily skin
  • dry skin
  • normal skin
  • combination skin

Once you’ve identified your skin type, go to Sephora or MAC and ask them for their best recommendations based on your shade and skin type. That should give you a general idea of foundations that may work for your skin. That doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with other products, feel free to choose whatever product you’d like. I have normal skin for the most part, but I get a little dry around my mouth and a little oily in my t-zone. So I guess that’s combination skin, lol. Even still, matte foundations are my go-to. I just can’t get on board with dewy or sheer foundations. Its a no for me! Okay, enough rambling. Here are my holy grail foundations, in no particular order.

Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer

I. LOVE. THIS. FOUNDATION!! Its literally some the best foundation I’ve ever used. It is very full coverage, but still feels light weight every time I wear it. This makeup is so skin like, but still has flawless application. Holding true to the name, this doubles as a foundation & concealer so you can skip the under eye highlight step altogether. I consider this my everyday (liquid) foundation. Now, I don’t wear liquid foundation everyday, but I definitely use this when I want to have a bit more coverage, but don’t want to be over the top and dramatic. However, this is buildable, so if you want over the top dramatic, you can still achieve that. The best thing about this foundation + concealer: it’s “high end” but super affordable- it retails for only $28.00!! TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS! That’s almost free. Okay, not really lol, but for this quality of foundation, $28 is a steal. You can purchase at Sephora or online: http://www.sephora.com/beyond-perfecting-foundation-concealer-P393325?skuId=1674704. Plus, they have a pretty wide shade range. I’m in the color Amber.

Estee Lauder Double Wear

This foundation is full coverage all-day-long. If you are looking for something more medium coverage, then keep walking past this one. Estee Lauder Double Wear is go big or go home! I love this foundation for date night or if I am going for a night on the town with the girls. My nights out are a big deal since they don’t happen as often. So I use this foundation for an ultra beat face! This is super smooth and creamy with a matte finish. Its a deep color with neutral undertones, which works great for me. It definitely stays in place all day, but I do bring my powder foundation just to blot after a few hours. It retails for $42 at Sephora, but I totally think its worth the price. You can get it here: http://www.sephora.com/double-wear-stay-in-place-makeup-P378284?skuId=1778562&icid2=products%20grid%3Ap378284. I’m in the color deep amber.

Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless

This foundation literally took the beauty world by storm! All of the top beauty influencers were raving about this product and I knew I wanted to try it. Once Jackie Aina and The Glam Twinz gave a review, I knew I had to get my hands on it. It was super hard to find my color in stores (355 coconut) until one day I lucked up at Walmart so I grabbed 3 of them! The best part of this foundation? The price. I got this foundation at Walmart for $6!! If you go to CVS or Walgreens, it may be be a few more dollars, but you won’t spend over $10. One of the other things that I love is how well it matches my skin. A+, Maybellinehttps://www.walmart.com/ip/Maybelline-New-York-Fit-Me-Matte-Poreless-Foundation-1-0-fl-oz/41127258?variantFieldId=actual_color

Loreal Infallible Pro Matte

This is another drug store foundation that is legend!!  L’Oréal’s Infallible Pro-Matte  has an air-light texture with a demi-matte finish. I am still surprised every time I wear it that it is not a high end foundation. The only thing I dislike about this is the shade range- it is not very brown girl friendly. I am in the color 112 and that’s the darkest shade *insert side eye here.*I know that I am on the darker side, but there are a lot more shades after mine. So, Loreal, step it up. Other than that, I love this stuff. It retails for about $12, give or take- you can buy it here: http://www.ulta.com/infallible-pro-matte-24hr-foundation?productId=xlsImpprod11861081

Mac Studio Fix Powder Foundation

If I had to say anything is my ultimate holy grail… this is it!! I’ve been rocking with this Studio Fix for 10 years now and I’ll never let it go. MAC makeup used to be the go to for me until I discovered so many other makeup brands. But I’ve never turned my back on my studio fix and I never will. This is for sure my everyday makeup foundation. When I’m going to work- I throw on some studio fix, do my eyebrows, put on mascara and a cute lippie, and I’m out the door. I have nothing but great things to say about this powder. If you ever see me, just know it’s not too far away! This retails for $29. I’m in the color NW45. Side note, knowing your shade at MAC can help determine your shade for other makeup brands, so you should go get a shade match if you don’t know yours already.  http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/13847/251/products/makeup/face/foundation/studio-fix-powder-plus-foundation#/shade/NC20

Make Up Forever Duo Matte Foundation

Now, I love my MAC Studio Fix, but this is Make Up Forever Powder is coming in at a close second. This is a long-lasting, oil-free mattifying powder foundation for normal to combination skin types. Everyone raved about this one as well, so I tried it and was not disappointed. I love the finish of this powder and it sets my makeup really well. I even sometimes use this as my everyday powder foundation when I want to give the Studio Fix a break. The only thing I don’t like is the fall out, but I’ve learned to just apply this with a towel over my lap to catch the mess. The shade range is also very lacking. Other than that, this powder is bomb! You should def give it a try. It retails for $34 at Sephora. I’m in the color 218 Chocolate, the darkest shade. *sigh* http://www.sephora.com/duo-mat-powder-foundation-P177118?skuId=989103&icid2=products%20grid:p177118

Okay, this post is already super long, so I’m going to end here. I hope this was informative!! Let me know your holy grail foundations in the comments below!

  1. This blog gave me all type of life. I really needed this because I’m a newborn when it comes to make-up. Thanks. I have the Estee Laurde and I love it……..but I will be trying some others for my everyday makeup and keep EL for special occasions.

  2. This was a great read. I’m still very new to make-up, but I’m for sure thinking about trying your Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer (I don’t own any concealer so this would be a great start). I do however have my top two foundations which would be 1. MAC Studio Fix “C7” and 2. Make Up Forever Ultra HD “173”. I do however want to ask what type of applicator do you use…..brushes, egg sponge, silicone egg, or the original white circle pad?

  3. I am clueless when it comes to makeup, especially foundation. I have very dry skin so it’s hard to find something that doesn’t crumble all over the face. I also have sensitive eyes so I often go without makeup because of the irritation. You have shared so many helpful products to try out, thank you for this!

    1. I literally have been to 100 Sephora’s trying to get my hands on it!!! I’m getting so frustrated 🙁 Hopefully they restock online soon. I’m in the shade 430…all the medium to deep shades are sold out everywhere!!! Let me know if you get a hold of it!

      Xo

  4. Thanks for sharing these! I rarely wear makeup, in part because I have no idea what I’m doing. This is a helpful list for picking options that are good for me and my skin!

    1. I use the NARS velvet matte skin tint in the summer and I love it! very light weight and skin like, but still has some coverage. I also just starting using glossier’s perfecting skin tint and that is awesome as well!
